Infographics are visual representations of informative content that look to communicate and allow users to discover, explore, and analyze the information. There are two types:

Horizontal infographics

Synthesize information, show temporary processes, create diagrams, lists, or maps. All visually and efficiently, in a landscape layout.

Vertical infographics

Ideal for showing data or complex content visually and easily. The vertical format is perfect for sharing the creation on social media as well as visualizing it on mobile devices. Create informative content, temporary processes, or lists.

2 · What are they used for?

Infographics are used to visualize data and information that is usually complex, in an easier and more accessible way.

3 · Who is it useful for?

If you are in the training sector

An infographic is the perfect format for displaying the introduction to a topic or generating a summary that serves as a study guide. On top of that, your students can develop their own infographics to show knowledge gained while doing research.

If you create digital content

Infographics will help you communicate complex ideas in an easy and efficient way. Convert specialized data (economic, scientific, political statistics,...) into visual creations that your audience will want to share.

If you are part of a business

You can show sales data or the results of a project visually and synthetically, thereby optimizing meetings. Your potential clients and investors will appreciate that you process and show information in a way that can be quickly assimilated.

4 · What are the characteristics?

4.1 · Text

Content in layers


Text on the canvas should be scarce so that our audience is able to quickly catch the ideas we want to transmit.

The heavier textual load will be found within interactivity so that the main page will have little to no text.

It's very important that text is organized hierarchically both in priorities (main and secondary ideas) as aesthetically (size, font, order, ...). Because of this, it is important to analyze the information we want to introduce in the infographic.

4.2 · Pages

Infographics are one-page documents.

4.3 · Interactivity

Secondary information, in layers.

Since we want to give information in a direct and easy way, we should avoid hiding main details in windows and tooltips. We can use this kind of interactivity, windows and tooltips, to include videos or secondary information that isn't as relevant, and therefore avoid overloading the design of our infographic.

We can also make use of links to social media in order to simplify the interaction in that we can create a direct link to any of our social media networks where we can complement our information with informative threads.

Interactivity through "go to page" is completely ruled out in infographics as they are one-page documents.

4.4 · Animation

Draw attention and organize hierarchically

Animation draws your audience's attention. We should use it in moderation so as not to overwhelm. We can use entrance animation to show the elements of our infographic sequentially, thereby helping to organize the information hierarchically.

Add animation that helps to transmit your message. Use interactive elements, since they have pre-designed animation effects, to mark off areas of interactivity.

4.5 · Integration

Complement the information

As the main information is shown on the page, the use of embedded content such as videos or timelines can help us to visually communicate our content.

4.6 · Content load

Find a balance between images and text.

Visual content should take precedence over textual. In that way, images, graphics, and visual metaphors should take up more space than words in our infographic.

4.7 · Navigation mode

Standard navigation.

The navigation allows us to move between pages. Since infographics are only one page, it isn't necessary to select anything. As a default, standard navigation will be set.

4.8 · Background

Add static backgrounds.

Combine base and canvas backgrounds. Remember that base backgrounds make transitions between pages more visual as well as allow your creation to be displayed amazingly on any device.

In general, it's best to use static backgrounds to not overload our audience.

4.9 · Format (dimensions)

Vary depending on the type of infographic.

Horizontal infographics have a canvas size of  1200 x 675 px and vertical of 800x1600 px.

You can always modify the canvas size and adapt it to your needs.

4.10 · Display options

Choose the settings that best fit your needs at each moment.

Among the display options, you can keep the share Genially option activated.

Keep the Interactivity Indicator option activated if you want to share your creation digitally (email, embedded in your blog or website).

Remember to keep the Full screen option activated so your infographic can be seen in detail.

In the view, you can zoom in and out in order to see the creation easily. 

5 · Structure

All of the information will be found on the same page.

Make use of templates to distribute information easily. You will find templates to make both horizontal and vertical infographics in their respective categories.

6 · Share and download

Work collaboratively and share your Infographic.

Spread your message with style.  As always, the options to share and download your Genially will depend on your plan, but you can always create and edit from any computer. You can download your creation in JPG or PDF to print your infographic. You can also download in HTML5 to maintain interactivity and animation. However, remember that content embedded from the web (video, audio, ...) won't work without an internet connection.

Adapt the tone and message

We have to keep our target audience in mind, analyzing their characteristics and typology: general public, young, experts, age range, interests, ...

Define the objective and intention of the message

We should already have defined our objectives and checked that our infographic responds to their questions.

Choose the medium for communicating the information

We can communicate via text, graphics, illustrations, or interactions.

Structure the content

We have to organize the information hierarchically in order to make it easily digestible.

The Perfect Structure

Efficient communication

We can check for the communicative efficiency of our creation by taking a step back from it. If doing this allows us to see the structure without needing to read the content, then our infographic is well structured and will be understood.

Reaching your audience

A good infographic should be understood without needing to read text. Text should complement our ideas, but not take center stage in the discourse of our infographic. To accomplish this, we should use simple terms that convert our creation into a legible and useful document.

What should you tell later?

It’s interesting to do a follow-up of usage statistics of our infographic to see what our audience interacted with the most. This way, we can see what ideas are most interesting and create a new infographic with these concepts.
